November is American Diabetes Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about one of the most common and preventable health conditions in the United States. At Highland District Hospital, we believe education is the first step toward prevention and better health outcomes. That’s why our Diabetes & You program is designed to help patients understand, manage, and live well with diabetes through personalized care and ongoing support.

Understanding Diabetes

Diabetes occurs when your body has trouble regulating blood sugar (glucose) levels, often due to insulin resistance or insufficient insulin production. Over time, uncontrolled diabetes can lead to serious complications affecting the heart, kidneys, eyes, and nerves—but with early detection and consistent management, these risks can be greatly reduced.

There are three main types of diabetes:

  • Type 1 Diabetes: An autoimmune condition where the body stops producing insulin.
  • Type 2 Diabetes: The most common type, typically linked to genetics, weight, and lifestyle.
  • Gestational Diabetes: A temporary form that can develop during pregnancy.

Regardless of the type, education and proactive care are key to living a healthy, fulfilling life.

Know the Risk Factors

You may be at higher risk for developing Type 2 diabetes if you:

  • Are over age 45
  • Have a family history of diabetes
  • Are overweight or physically inactive
  • Have high blood pressure or high cholesterol
  • Experienced gestational diabetes or delivered a baby over 9 pounds

If any of these apply, it’s a good time to talk with your healthcare provider about screening. Early detection can make all the difference.
