Understanding Pain Management: What It Is—and How HDH Can Help You Feel Like Yourself Again

September 16, 2025

Pain is something most of us experience at some point, whether it’s a stiff back after yard work, a nagging knee from an old injury, or something more complex and chronic. But when pain stops being a temporary inconvenience and starts interfering with your daily life, it’s time to look beyond quick fixes. That’s where Pain Management comes in.

At Highland District Hospital, our Pain Management Center is here to help you get your life back with expert care, advanced treatment options, and a personalized approach right here in Hillsboro.

What Is Pain Management?

Pain management is a specialized field of medicine focused on diagnosing the source of pain and treating it with both short- and long-term solutions. It combines medical treatments, interventional procedures, physical therapy, and lifestyle strategies to reduce or eliminate discomfort.

Pain is complex. It's not always about fixing one issue—sometimes it's about managing how your body processes pain signals and how you can function better with less disruption.

At HDH, our pain specialists work closely with you to find the most effective treatment path based on your specific diagnosis, lifestyle, and goals.

When Should You See a Pain Management Specialist?

While occasional aches and pains are normal, chronic or severe pain shouldn't be ignored—especially if it's affecting your ability to work, sleep, or enjoy daily life. You may benefit from pain management if you experience:

  • Ongoing neck, back, or joint pain
  • Nerve pain, including sciatica, neuropathy, or shingles-related pain
  • Arthritis or other degenerative joint conditions
  • Persistent pain after surgery
  • Headaches or migraines that disrupt your routine
  • Cancer-related pain or pain from complex chronic conditions

You don’t need to live with pain. Many people assume it’s “just part of aging” or “not serious enough” to treat—but early intervention can prevent long-term complications and reduce your reliance on medications.

Treatment Options at Highland District Hospital

Our Pain Management Center offers a wide range of minimally invasive and advanced interventional treatments—right here, close to home.

Some of the options we provide include:

  • Epidural steroid injections and nerve blocks for spine and nerve pain
  • Radiofrequency ablation to disrupt pain signals
  • Spinal cord stimulation and peripheral nerve stimulation
  • Joint injections for arthritis pain, including genicular nerve blocks
  • Kyphoplasty for vertebral compression fractures
  • Minimally invasive spine surgery, including decompression for spinal stenosis
  • Botox for migraines and other neurologic pain disorders
  • Intrathecal drug delivery systems for chronic pain management

Our treatments are designed to target the source of pain, not just mask the symptoms.

A Team-Based Approach to Your Care

Pain is personal, and so is our care. At HDH, your treatment is led by a board-certified pain management specialist and supported by a multidisciplinary team of nurses, surgical staff, and rehabilitation experts. Together, we create a customized treatment plan that evolves with your needs.
